Another sad story has to do with my days as a high end waiter (that’s what I was doing when I started my business). The restaurant was in the top 2 restaurants in Houston. The owners of the restaurant died and a couple of gals that worked there took over the business. They didn’t have a clue about marketing and they would bemoan how bad business was. When my wife and I would go there for dinner, we would try to share ideas, but it seemed that they weren’t interested in ideas.
One night I found out why.
As she was complaining about how bad business was, she was labeling some post cards. I remembered these post cards from when the previous owners used them. They were big full color post cards that were sent to their regular customers. The post card offered a free desert. The idea was to get customers in the restaurant so they would then have dinner, or buy Champagne or whatever.
So I asked her “How do those post cards work?” “Phenomenal” she said. Wow, this is the first positive thing I’ve heard this gal say in 3 years. I thought to myself. “So, how often do you send them out?” I asked. “About once a year.” She replied.
I was expecting that she would go on to explain why they weren’t sent more often, but she didn’t, so I asked “Why wouldn’t you send them out more often if they work so well?”

1. Get a Higher Price
The first thing I plugged into the spreadsheet was an increase of 10% across the board. When you market to your existing clients properly, you should be able to command a higher price. Unfortunately, those who do market to their existing customers are mailing the wrong things. They are sending their customers really crappy stuff because they are cheap. By sending regular mailers you create “Top Of Mind Awareness” (TOMA). You want to keep your company on the minds of your previous clients.
These are people that already know you. They already trust you. They have already paid your price. Assuming that you did a great job they will use you again, if… you stay in touch with them.
People simply forget your name. There are lots of reasons for it. Maybe they know you best by your personal name rather than your company name. Your name happens to be John Smith. Good luck finding you in the residential pages! Some cleaners don’t even have a business line, which is just PLAIN DUMB! And by the way, you NEVER want to send your clients to the Yellow Pages to look for you. Too much competition there!! Your clients should always have something in front of them with your name on it. Every time you send something to your previous clients in the mail, it keeps a few more people from forgetting about you. By mailing monthly, perhaps our little $80k example which is now at $88k could retain 10% more clients adding another $8,800.00, bringing it to $96,800.00.
- Sell More Services
Surely your company offers upholstery cleaning, carpet protector, tile and grout cleaning, commercial cleaning, and other services, right? Advertise those services to your client on a regular basis. Is it possible to add about 10% across the board with these additional services? I think so.
That would bring our total retained revenue up to $106,480.00.
A nice jump from $80k!
- Increase Frequency of Use.
Here’s where it gets real interesting. If you increase the number of times that your customers use your service, it could have the most impact on your sales dollars. Educating your clients how often to clean their carpet, and helping them understand “cleaning for health” can change how often they clean. The more often your clients use your service, the more money you make. In the spreadsheet, I increased the frequency of cleaning from every 24 months, to every 18 months.
That entry alone, added $58,000.00 per year to the example. That brings the total to $164,480.00.

This example has not even taken into account the increased referrals you can get from your clients by marketing to them consistently.
